National libraries of Iran and Azerbaijan to boost ties

TEHRAN, Nov. 25 (MNA) -- The National Library and Documentation Center of Iran (NLDCI) and the National Library of Azerbaijan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) here on Saturday.

NLDCI director Ali-Akbar Ash’ari made a speech emphasizing the necessity of boosting cultural ties between regional countries so that both the people and the academic figures of each nation can get to know each other better.

He added that the MOU substantiates the fact that the Republic of Azerbaijan is considered to be not only one of the major countries of the region but also that it is highly valued culturally.

Kerim Tahirov, head of the National Library of Azerbaijan, who was staying in Iran for a few days, said that during his visit he had become familiar with the developments of Iranian experts in the fields of running libraries and information dissemination.

Whilst touring the National Library and Documentation Center of Iran, Tahirov referred to it as one of the most glorious libraries in the world and called for greater cooperation on the part of Iranian experts with Azerbaijan.

Activities mentioned in the MOU are the holding of book fairs, the exchange of experts in various fields and the setting up of sessions on the preservation of manuscripts.

In addition, Iran’s Majlis Spokesman Gholamali Haddad-Adel, who has recently returned from the Azerbaijan Republic, announced that Iran is to donate a language laboratory to Azerbaijan in order to promote the Persian language.

He added that Azeri students who are studying Persian will receive student scholarships to enable them to continue their studies in Iran as far as M.A. and Ph.D.
